Figures show that there are 3.8 million people living with a diabetes diagnosis in the UK,90% of those have Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is when your body is unable to make enough insulin, or the insulin you do make doesn’t work properly. This is known as insulin resistance and means the level of glucose in your blood is too high.
There are some things that can put you at a higher risk of having type 2 diabetes; like family history, age, weight and ethnicity. You can thankfully manage type 2 diabetes in more ways than type 1, and not just through medication, great results have been seen through exercise and nutrition. Type 2 Diabetes cannot be 'cured', but there is evidence to say through nutrition and exercise, it can be put into remission or for pre-diabetics, prevented in the first place.
Its not surprise then that this type of diabetes can be the result of excess body weight and physical inactivity.
Diabetes, the grim 'did you know' facts:
· adults with diabetes have a two- to three-fold increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.
· Combined with reduced blood flow, neuropathy (nerve damage) in the feet increases the chance of foot ulcers, infection and eventual need for limb amputation.
· Diabetes is the cause of 2.6% of global blindness. Diabetic retinopathy occurs as a result of long-term accumulated damage to the small blood vessels in the retina.
· Diabetes is among the leading causes of kidney failure.
Simple lifestyle measures have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes.
